Lola Gil is an American painter born in 1975 in Riverside, California, and currently lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a self-taught artist who began painting early in life as something she enjoyed, which has developed into a strong work ethic that she upholds today. Her artworks focus on figurative and narrative, often uncanny imagery within a surrealistic landscape. Gil's compositions often reveal themselves through subconscious imagery, resulting in moments of quick clarity that translate into her art. Her use of almost tangible-looking objects in the foreground enhances the slightly off-putting effect of the subjects in the background, connecting to reveal a clearer message.

Gil's practice explores undertones of nostalgia with themes of connection, relationships, and psychology/human autonomy, offering viewers a perplexing feeling of warmth and familiarity within an unfamiliar space. Her color palette plays a significant role, and the silent character represents the emotional aspect of each work.

Gil's exhibition history includes solo exhibits at prominent galleries such as AishoNanzuka in Hong Kong, Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, KP Projects in Los Angeles, and numerous group exhibits and art fairs globally. She has participated in events like The Armory Show NY, Art Basel Miami, and more. Tears Bring Change, as Change Brings Tears/ Oil & Acrylic on Canvas/ 2019

Reaction: The uncanny value of the piece combined with the dystopian, environmentally-related content makes it very interesting conceptually, the mixed perspectives and composition bring the eye of the viewer to a few different elements, suggesting the narrative that goes behind the work. I am a fan of her unique style and relation to global warming and endangerment, and her contrasting color palate also inspires me, the neon figure was a compelling choice.

Reaction: This piece feels very solemn and exudes a feeling of boredom or restlessness. The glass bunny in the foreground makes the piece 10x more interesting, suggesting a connection between the subject and the item. I have been staring at it for a long time trying to figure out exactly the context, but its got a
