Artist Statement

In my art I want to express abstract thoughts on my perception of life and my experiences that have led to how I see the world, and primal emotions that go beyond words. The beauty of multimedia, especially with sculptural elements is that it allows me to explore ideas related to the environment, nature, nostalgia, darkness, struggle, anger, age and other personal and societal issues that are on my mind through raw and visceral materials and shapes that have always spoken to me. Using black ink pens as my preferred medium due to the freedom they provide for creating loose and messy marks to achieve the desired look. The process of each piece is what makes it unique, each one  bearing a distinct mark and style. Color choice plays a vital role in my work, with a preference for cool tones like reds, blacks, purples, and blues, highlighted with bright whites and the inclusion of metallic or pearlescent materials enhance the visual impact. Creating unique textures and using 3d elements such as rhinestones, clay, and hot glue  adds dimension to my work. Contrary to more “perfect '' clean lines, I have learned to embrace my gestural mark, depending on silhouettes and line weight to show movement and depth. I rarely follow a strict plan, preferring to let the creative journey unfold organically. Starting with a base color, I often depict main figures often involving human anatomy, like a rib cage, because I find visual appeal in the structure. I have recently implemented many figure drawings of animals in my pieces as well. This helps to express my deep love for animals and nature and the crucial ripple nature has played in shaping myself.  My art is meant to engage a striking, emotional response with the viewer, falling into endless interpretations. In creating layers and complexities within the piece my goal is to leave the purpose slightly ambiguous. Most of my pieces have unsettling undertones, which is part of my experimentation with horror illustrations and creating a feeling of discomfort surrounding the human body and experience.
